Mom & Dad visit: Day Four

London, Pubs

So I didn’t go to the Rugby game yesterday like I mentioned, but I forgot to say that I didn’t go because traveling to and from the game cost more than the ticket and it wasn’t worth it. Oh well.

Today I got up at 8am to pick up my take-home exam paper, which I researched and wrote until 2. 2-3 I had another internship briefing (useless) and at 3 I walked to the library to finalize my exam papers, print them out, and hand them in to the office. I spent until around 5 reading and gathering my notes for my AH exam tomorrow. Then I went to the hotel and napped with Mom till Dad showed up at 6:15. Because Mom wasn’t feeling well, Dad and I had another pub dinner at Stanhope. I ordered fish & chips and cleaned the plate! We sat around and chatted for a while before heading home so I could study, but that hasn’t happened yet. So far, I’ve only packed a little and spent the rest of the time looking at pictures online. I’m clearly a waste of space. Tomorrow: exam from 9-11am and then picking up the car to go to Yorkshire for the week ❤

Mom & Dad visit: Day Three

Architecture, London

The day went like this:
Woke up at 8, took a shower at 10, got ready and went to Holborn with Melissa only to find out that the store we were going to visit is closed on Sundays. So I went back to the hotel room and read for a little and napped for a little before my parents came back. Then, while Dad was napping, Mom and I researched car rentals and then went shopping on High Street Kensington. I got two lovely new shirts from Laura Ashley because Mommy is the best ever ❤ When all the stores closed at six, we went back to get Dad and then the three of us took the Tube to Victoria and looked around. Went to a restaurant called The Shakespeare where I got Chicken Tikka Masala–a delectable Indian dish. Then we walked to Buckingham Palace which was glowing and beautiful.

We strolled down the St. James’s Park Mall before ending up at Westminster Abbey and Parliament again. The moon was foggy and mysterious but it didn’t come out well on camera.

Not a soul in sight. At 10pm Sunday night, London sleeps.

We waited till 10pm to hear Big Ben chime. I took a really good video but alas, it cannot be uploaded easily and I was dumb and taped it vertically, which means the image is tilted. But it was a really powerful moment—the chiming of the bell—even with all the surrounding loud traffic. I doubt I will ever tire of walking around the city of Westminster.

Mom & Dad visit: Day Two

Architecture, London

Absolutely knackered, so I’ll try and keep it brief.

This morning I met Mom & Dad at 11. We went to Trafalgar Square to tour the National Gallery and see fair doses of Rubens, Reynolds, Constable, and even a Leonardo. Then we Tubed it to St. Paul’s to take a look inside the cathedral and walk around the area, where we found the Central Court.

Then we walked across the very windy Millennium Bridge and visited Tate Modern. There was some pretty weird stuff in there, like an entire palm tree tipped over and coated in gray paint, rope tangled in a pile, three vacuums encased in glass, and a canvas covered with a mirror. However, there was a fair share of notables: Braque, Duchamp, Klee, Rothko, Pollock, Warhol. We were really tired though so we blew through a lot of rooms. A view after one of the Abstract Expressionism rooms:

I am definitely planning a trip back, especially to see the Pop Art exhibit now on view.

We took a nap at the hotel before going out to Green Door Steak House for dinner, where I ordered two delicious Midori Sour’s and my meal: braised steak with mushrooms and pale ale pastry pie with mashed potatoes. Wonderful. Mom and Dad went to check out Piccadilly Circus but I opted to stay in for the night and get some rest. Tomorrow: studying, and then a Rugby game!

Mom & Dad visit: Day One

Iconic Sights, London, Nightlife, Photography

So I realize I haven’t posted in a few days. I promise I haven’t been slacking, I’ve just been so busy with things. So on Thursday, I went to the Press Complaints Commission with my journalism class where we talked about the code of privacy and the English press in terms of photography. Our class of 20 girls (and one guy, the poor thing) were hanging on edge to the lecture of one young and good-looking British man, but we kept ourselves mostly composed. Afterwards, I headed to a store called Neu and bought some necessities (black flats, cardigan, jeans, shirts), then sped home for my internship briefing. That night, a group of the usuals went to Vendome—this club with amazing decor and landscape design to die for. The dancing was fun but the free drinks are always the best part about knowing the right people. A good night.

Today, mummy and dad arrived! We went out for breakfast and then traveled to St. John’s Wood on the Jubilee Line to see Abbey Road and take the appropriate pictures of walking across it. Which was harder than I thought it would be–the road is really busy!

Also to note: Kris Allen was there doing the same thing which was really cool. For the confused: he was the winner of the latest American Idol. I saw my first celebrity! (alas, I was too shy to ask him for one personally)

Then we went to Baker Street to browse the Beatles store and got to observe the outside of the Sherlock Holmes museum.

By that point Mom and Dad were exhausted so they went back to sleep and I took a trip to Westminster, where I walked from Parliament to Shakespeare’s Globe. Although they had no tickets left for the show that day, I bought myself an As You Like It programme and button. Went back, took a shower, then napped till dinnertime.

Parents in tow, I took them to Notting Hill Gate to walk down Portobello Road and peek through the antique shop windows. Eventually we found ourselves seated at the Earl of Lonsdale pub for a spot of dinner. I ordered Toad in the Hole, a traditional English dish of sausages laid in Yorkshire pudding with gravy and peas&carrots. It was really good! (I’m easy to please when it comes to Yorkshire pudding) Then we took the Tube to Westminster to see downtown at night–Big Ben and Parliament, the Eye, the bridges, Trafalgar Square.

I LOVED that the Eye was purple that night.

Back home, we stopped in Stanhope Arms pub (my usual spot) for some spirits and then went back to our respective rooms to recuperate.

Tomorrow: more time with Mum&Dad (where that will lead–only time will tell) and a bit of studying.

Uncategorized

Other than the thought that I need to dress more fashionably, nothing much went on today. Went to class, went to the library, bought yet another batch of groceries (as I seem to binge eat when I don’t feel like doing work), ate some soup for dinner, and watched some Japanese drama in the room. Will probably go to bed in like 15 minutes as I have a major headache. Boo. Tomorrow: field trip to the Press Complaints Commission, internship briefing afterwards, and celebrating the end of classes with a night out clubbing at Vendome.

Art, Museums

Blah day. Blah day. Blah everything.

Went to class and had a review. Went to V&A and saw some Turner/Constable/Hogarth. Went to the library to work on my paper. Went to my apartment to read and take a nap. Going to make a measly dinner in about an hour. Going to go to bed earlier than usual.

My room

Food, London

is no place to get work done. So I have nothing better to do but post again.

Can you believe that I left Boston for London to escape the rain? Apparently, it’s been legit raining there all the time and we’ve had straight sunshine for 4 weeks. Life is good!

Also, for real I need to diet. I swear, this is the last pack of digestives and I am DONE with the cookies and DONE with the eating every 5 seconds. I have been eating more here than I’ve ever done in my lifeeee. So after these 7 or so cookies that are left, I am going to eat nothing but MEALS and FRUIT and VEGETABLES and the last of these pretzels and am going to run a few times a week and do crunches in the park and everything. And if all else fails, I am going to literally throw out the snacks that I buy. And if THAT fails, I’m going to get my roommates to legit yell at me if they see me going for chocolate or cupcakes or croissants or Vanilla Chai Tea Lattés.

Ready set go.
